Tony completed and passed the UEFA ‘A’ license with the Welsh FA 2019 and prior to that in 2013 gained a Masters of Research in Sports and Exercise Sciences with the specific focus being on decision making capabilities in Elite and Non-Elite Youth team soccer players. His undergraduate education was a BA Hons in Community Sport Development at Glyndwr University in Wales focusing on Youth team players attacking principles of play.
Coach Merola has served on the Boys ECNL staff at Solar Soccer Club in the North Texas area. Prior to this, he was the Liverpool FC's International Academy America's Director of Soccer Development for two years. In this role, he worked with Youth Soccer Clubs in seven States adding value through coach education and providing monthly lectures to Directors of Coaching whilst supporting all on field soccer activities weekly.
From 2014 to 2016, Tony also served as the Academy Manager at the International Academy based in Dallas. His primarily role was to manage and oversee the clubs Academy from U5 through to U10 (boys and girls) implementing a structured coaching program that supported coaches in helping develop players 'The Liverpool Way'.
In 2012 he worked full time for 2 years at Wales’ oldest professional soccer club as Head Coach at Wrexham Football Club’s Community Foundation program. Part of this role was managing and training coaches to deliver extra-curricular activities in schools across North Wales with a structured curriculum that helped coordination skills and soccer specific small sided games.
Coaching, teaching, developing and working with young soccer players is a great passion of coach Tony and is a specialist in the area of the pedagogical development of coaching especially with the objective of developing decisions making skills in players.
